In a Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”  Centuries earlier, the great Benedictine mystic, saint, and doctor of the church, Hildegard of Bingen composed a hymn that included the phrase, “In every wound a jewel; in every break, a bud.” Being broken and budding forth seem to be part and parcel of the sacred human drama we call life.  This morning’s reflective time will form a threshold into Lent 2017 by looking into the condition of our human, hurting, and holy hearts.  We will explore the legendary Jesuit theologian Karl Rahner’s image of “the rubbled-over heart,” and through music and poetry; speech and silence; aloneness and ritual, prepare to do the heart-work of the Lenten season.  Fee:  $20

Facilitator:  Avis Clendenen is a retired Professor Emerita of Religious Studies from Saint Xavier University where she most recently served as Special Assistant to the President.  Avis now offers days of reflection and retreats that integrate the arts and technology, exploring the intersections of Christian spirituality and depth psychology.  She is a published author.
